Photo editing awesomeness...

... sans graphic designer.
As SUM finished yet another lovely site for one of our clients, a common challenge surfaced: all she wanted to do was populate her news page with (1) the photos she took, (2) day or night, and darn it, they had to be (3) right side up and cropped here and there.
That's when we discovered... *drum roll please*... Picnik. What is Picnik, you ask? Picnik is a web-based photo editing application that makes it super-easy to adjust color, remove red-eye, apply effects, add words and even more to your photos. The lovely part is that you don't need to have any experience at all with photo editing and the basic plan is free. All you have to do is create an account, upload a photo, and viola.
I specifically love Picnik for several reasons. First, it's a really clever idea that realized a niche that won't be going away any time soon. Second, it's incredibly friendly. It's not only easy to use, but it makes you feel smart about what you're doing. Third, it's completely accessible. It's free, and you can edit photos from wherever you have a computer, a high-speed internet connection and a photo.
Now don't get me wrong, I love my Photoshop, but c'mon, this is just too cool. Next time I update my blog, tweak my Flickr, MySpace or facebook accounts, or just don't have anything to do, you may just catch me enjoying a Picnik. Why don't you join me?
